Santa Cruz County Report Card: What do you Think?

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif.- Starting on Friday, April 12th, Santa Cruz County residents will have the opportunity to give their opinions about their quality of life in the County. During the months of April and May, over 900 county residents will be surveyed by telephone for their perspectives on the economy, education, health, public safety, and the social and natural environment. The survey, which takes about 15 minutes to complete, will be conducted in both English and Spanish and all answers will be both anonymous and confidential. The data will provide an aggregate snapshot of the lives of Santa Cruz County residents and will be combined with other county data to create Santa Cruz County’s yearly report card known as the Santa Cruz County Community Assessment Project (CAP).

This is the 19th year of the project, which is sponsored by the United Way of Santa Cruz County and over a dozen other partners.

Police: Man On Probation Caught With Gun In Watsonville

WATSONVILLE, Calif. - Authorities say a suspected gang member was arrested after being caught with a loaded gun in Watsonville Wednesday evening.

They say the suspect -- identified as 32-year-old Manuel Cabazuela -- is on probation after being arrested and convicted last year of possession of a loaded stolen firearm by a felon, participation in a gang and assault with a deadly weapon.

It all started at about 5 p.m. when two Santa Cruz County Task Force members contacted two suspected gang members sitting in a car in a parking lot in the 300 block of East Lake Avenue.

Officers tried to conduct a compliance search, but they say Cabazuela became resistive and was subsequently wrestled to the ground. During the scuffle, officers say he threw a loaded handgun onto the ground.
