Crime Reaches 30 Year Low in Watsonville

News Release from Assemblyman Luis Alejo's Office:

Assemblymember Luis Alejo will present a resolution on Tuesday honoring the Watsonville Police Department for achieving its lowest crime rate in 30 years. In an economic climate where factors such as the struggling housing market and high unemployment often lead to an increase in criminal behavior, the Watsonville Police Department is being recognized for finding ways to significantly reduce crime in 2010.

Overall, crime fell 15% in 2010 including a 17% drop in property crime and an 8% decrease in violent crime. Gang related violent crime fell 11% and juvenile arrests were down 34%. In addition, homicides saw a 75% drop.

Owing to the success is the joint effort between the Watsonville Police Department and the City of Watsonville to implement gang prevention, intervention, and suppression programs that address the early stages of gang affiliation and habitual violent gang offenders.
