March For California's Future

WATSONVILLE, Calif.- A diverse group of Californians, including a San Diego community college professor, two Los Angeles probation officers, a Watsonville teacher, a retired Berkeley adult educator, and a retired Los Angeles teacher today announced they will embark March 5th on a 48 day "March for California's Future."

The March, sponsored by the California Federation of Teachers (CFT) and a coalition of labor, education and faith groups, will begin with a Los Angeles rally at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, after which marchers will travel to Bakersfield to begin their walk. Following in Cesar Chavez's footsteps, hundreds of firefighters, nurses, in]home care workers, students, and police officers will join the marchers for parts of their 260]mile Bakersfield to Sacramento trek.

City Has A New Flag

On Tuesday night, council members approved the design for a new city flag.

It should be ready in about two or three months and will fly at City Hall.  The town expects it to cost about $260 to make.

Paul de Worken decided to design the flag when he heard the city was looking for one.  He sent them several ideas and on Tuesday night, council members picked one.  We will post a picture of the flag as soon as we get one.

City & School Team Up For Itty Bitty Cheer Program!

Watsonville Parks & Community Services Department announced it's teaming up with Pajaro Valley High School Cheerleading to create the Itty Bitty Cheer Program!

The program is for kids 3-5 years-old and offers a fun and supportive environment to learn the basics of cheerleading.

On Tuesday, the town said Itty Bitty Cheer participants learn about team work and build self-confidence while making new friends.  It's also a chance for high school students to give back to the community.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Gets $5,000 Grant

Big Brothers Big Sisters has been awarded a grant of $5,000 to expand its After-School Program in Watsonville. With the funding, the agency will be able to serve an additional 125 youth in the coming year. Through the support and guidance provided by volunteer mentors, participating children will be more likely to stay in school, out of the juvenile justice system and to transcend society’s barriers of class, race and language.
 
The Community Action Committee (CAC) and Hitachi Foundation have been longtime supporters of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring services in Santa Cruz County. The Committee and Foundation recognize the consistent excellence of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ volunteers and staff, as well as proven outcomes in the lives of children and youth locally.

County Fair Earns 20 Awards

The 2009 edition of the Santa Cruz County Fair earned over 20 awards for excellence at the 2010 Western Fairs Association (WFA) convention.  In fact the Fair ranked with some of the biggest fairs in the west when it came to earning accolades for innovative programs and community outreach.

The Fair received first place recognition for the 2009 Agricultural Program as well as Best Single Day and Competitive Exhibits Promotion.  The Fair also was tops in the categories of Entry Form, Exhibit Display Props or Methods, Our Best New Idea This Year - Exhibits, Our Best New Idea This Year - Maintenance, and Vendor Packet.  Marketing, including a very strong effort in the use of social media, was honored including a first place for Display Newspaper Advertising, Single Ad.

Soccer Game to Help Victims in Haiti

Wednesday is a big soccer game for the Watsonville Wildcatz boys soccer team.

They're playing rival Pajaro Valley High School at 4pm.  The winner will take a big step towards capturing the MBL title.  The team is also raising money to help people in Haiti.

We've learned that the money made at the entrance will be sent to help victims from last month's earthquake.
