Crime Rate Down for California, Check Out How Local Counties are Doing

The California Department of Justice today released the annual Crime in California report, which shows that the crime rate in every category of violent or property offenses decreased in California in 2010.

This is the fourth year in a row violent crime has decreased in California. In total, the violent crime rate decreased 6.9 percent, reaching its lowest level since 1968, and homicide and forcible rape rates are the lowest since 1966.

In Monterey County there was a decrease of overall violent crimes by 3.8 %.

Car Allegedly Used in Salinas Homicide Found in Watsonville

 A car that was allegedly used in the shooting death of a teenager has been found in Watsonville, said police.

Brian Zamudio died after he was shot on August 31. Police believe that the gold-colored Toyota Avalon that was found by Watsonville Police was the car that was used in the shooting.

Monday, Central coast News talked to the woman caught in the middle and found out she's still living in fear.

What happened at the Garden Hill Apartments nearly ten years ago still haunts one Watsonville woman and still has police searching for justice

"He showed up at the house and beat and stabbed the victim to death in front of his ex-wife," said Detective Morgan Chappell.

The victim was the ex-wife's new boyfriend, Pedro Montes.

"I think about it all the time...That's why I'm sick.  I have nightmares, I have diabetes and it's caused by everything that happened.

Watsonville Man Guilty of Kidnapping and Rape Gets 30 Years

A Watsonville man convicted of kidnapping and rape, gets 30 year to life and apologizes to victims.

The District Attorney's office issued the following statement:

District Attorney Bob Lee, announced today that Rene Hernandez of Watsonville, age 29, who was convicted on July 6 of kidnapping, rape and digital penetration was sentenced by Judge Rebecca Connolly to the maximum combined sentence possible, 30 years to life. The mandatory minimum for each sex crime was 15 years to life, with the possibility of a second 15 to life term which could be consecutive or concurrent.

The District Attorney and the Probation Department recommended the thirty year sentence. Judge Connolly found that the crimes were sufficiently aggravated, unprovoked, and committed against a helpless victim, and that accordingly the consecutive terms should be imposed.

The victim did not appear in court.

Mario Ayala Sanchez is wanted on several drug charges. Watsonville Police say that they have arrested Sanchez before. They say that Ayala was in possession of an AR-15 Police/Military style assault rifle and should be considered armed and dangerous.
