Watsonville, Calif. - Last month, Irene, a single mother who was out of work and couldn't find a safe place for her kids to sleep, walked into the Pajaro Valley Shelter Services.

"They teach us a lot of things that we don't know. We learn how to save money; they offer us self defense classes and parenting classes," said Irene.

She and her kids can stay for 90 days until she gets back on her feet.

"We also have a transitional housing program where families can live up to 2 years," said executive director, Kimberly Ferm.

Ferm said the Watsonville shelter helps at least 250 of the most severe cases each year," we require families to set goals and meet them and work towards them.
