STAR Scores Show Improvement, Still Lag Behind State Average

Good news for school districts on the Central Coast,  "STAR" test scores are up at least two percent for every category in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.  And in San Benito county-- scores are up in every category-- except science.

The tests measure English, history, math and science for students in second thru 11th grade. For a complete look at the results click the link below.

Stabbing Victim Found at Middle School Parking Lot

Officers found a 15-year-old stabbing victim in the parking lot of E. A. Hall Middle School Tuesday morning.

Police say that the teenage boy was stabbed twice in the upper torso. The victim told police that he was walking in an alley near the 600 block of Palm Street when he was approached by a Hispanic male in is 20's wearing a Raiders jacket.  According to the victim, the suspect stabbed him multiple times after he said that he had no gang affiliations.

Police say that the victim ran away and made it to the school parking lot and then he called the police.

The victim was taken to the hospital and his current condition in unknown.

California is finalist for education reform grants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California is among 18 states and the District of Columbia that are finalists in the second round of the federal "Race to the Top" school reform grant competition.

U.S. Department of Education officials provided The Associated Press with a list of the finalists on Tuesday ahead of a speech by Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

California will have a chance to win as much as $700 million in the national competition, which rewards ambitious reforms aimed at improving struggling schools and closing the achievement gap. The U.S. Education Department is expected to announce the winners of the second phase in September.

Two states, Tennessee and Delaware, were awarded a total of $600 million in the first round.

Fundraising BBQ at Second Street Cafe

Jessie & Mackenzie, co-owners of the Second Street Cafe are gearing up for a fundraiser this Saturday (July 24th) to benefit the Watsonville High Boosters Club, which need our help in the wake of recent budget cuts. We want our neighborhood children to be able to participate in sports in school, so a portion of the proceeds from Saturday's BBQ will go to the Boosters Club. Come join us from 4-8pm for a delicious BBQ dinner in support of the kids!  Second Street Cafe is located at  28 2nd Street.

State Says that 7 Local Districts May Not Be Able to Pay their Bills

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell said Tuesday that 174 districts may not be able to meet their financial obligations over the next few years. That's an increase of over 38% from last year.

Turning Things Around at Watsonville High School

Things are improving at Watsonville High School.  The Western Association of Schools and Colleges awarded the school a two year accreditation.

The group said the school must keep its focus on student achievement.

Extra Long Summer Vacation

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports kids will get a longer summer vacation this year.

Pajaro Valley Unified Schools will start August 23.  That's 11 days later than last year.
