Bill from Salinas asked KION, "Why are there LED streetlights around Bronson St. in Watsonville?"
It's because the city is getting down to earth! They "saw the light" so to say.
At the end of last month, Watsonville installed 462 of LED lights in the Bay Village area. The Public Works Department said that's where their oldest high pressure sodium streetlights were located.
The new LED lights were paid for through a grant with the Department of Energy's federal stimulus package. Watsonville received about $215,000.
The new lights will reduce the amount of energy used, reduce the city's electric bill, produce better quality light and Watsonville said the maintenance costs will be nearly cut in half.
