Big Rig Fire on Hwy 129

Nobody was hurt when a truck caught fire on Highway 129 and spilled gallons of diesel fuel onto the side of the road.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel the driver noticed the engine compartment on fire near Old Chittenden Road.  The paper reports the trucker pulled to the side of the road around 4:40 a.m., disconnected the trailer and pulled the big rig forward away from the trailer.  He used an extinguisher to put out the flames, but it did not work.

Engine Removed from Watsonville Plane Wreckage

The engine of a plane that crashed in an apple orchard just north of the Watsonville Airport was removed Monday; an FAA spokesperson said it's the focus of the investigation into the crash that left the pilot dead.

The pilot was the only person on board the plane and was killed; the Santa Cruz County  Sheriff's Coroner's Office identified him as Gary Lampert, 58, of Atherton.  It's still not known from where the pilot came or where he was flying; an FAA spokesperson said he did not file a flight plan.

The plane is described as a homebuilt Lancair Legacy.

FAA Investigates Watsonville Plane Crash

An FAA investigator returned Sunday to the scene of a small plane crash north of Watsonville.

The pilot was the only person on board the plane and was killed; the Santa Cruz County  Sheriff's Coroner's Office identified him as Gary Lampert, 58, of Atherton.  It's still not known from where the pilot came or where he was flying; an FAA spokesperson said he did not file a flight plan.

The plane is described as a homebuilt Lancair Legacy.

Authorities say an experimental aircraft was on approach Saturday afternoon to Watsonville Municipal Airport when the pilot reported his engine was on fire to the Oakland Air Control station. There were no further reports from the pilot.  The owners of an apple orchard in Freedom Blvd. heard the crash and called police. 

 

Watercooler Art Exhibit

The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) announces a new watercolor exhibit by Bonni Carver. Bonni’s art is available for viewing in our office located at 1523 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz as part of our on-going art exhibits hosted every two
months.

Her art is available for viewing between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday through noon on December 24, 2009 excluding holidays and weekends.
